Many Women in Midlife are Feeling Stuck

If you’re a woman in your 50s or 60s the chances are you’ve spent decades juggling work, family, and countless responsibilities. Perhaps you’ve built a successful career but find yourself burned out and unfulfilled (and, quite possibly, fed up with the latest in a string of new bosses!). Maybe you’ve taken time out for caregiving, and now you’re struggling to re-enter the workplace - Or perhaps you’re just sick and tired of the grind but don’t see a way ever to retire without sacrificing your financial security and with little or no pension funds available.

You’re not alone. Many women in midlife are feeling stuck—ready for a change but unsure of the next step. The good news? There’s a growing movement of women just like you (and me) who are breaking free from traditional employment and starting their own businesses online ... and it’s not nearly as daunting as you might think.

Finding a Way Through the Fog

Hi, I'm Viv - and I'm guessing that if you've found and opened this article - and read this far - there's a good chance that you're seriously interested in finding out more.  So let me tell you a little about how I arrived at the same position of curiosity as you probably are now ...

Six years ago, I retired after a 24-year career in UK mental health services, expecting a permanent vacation—no alarm clock, no deadlines, just freedom. For six months, it was. Then life intervened. After a year supporting my father in a care home, I faced a major Crohn’s disease flare. Recovery was slow and firmly reminded me that life isn’t a dress rehearsal.

A move from suburbia to rural Devon seemed like the perfect reset - but once the excitement faded, I felt lost ... directionless, lacking purpose, and struggling with a pension that didn’t stretch far enough. Almost a year passed before I acknowledged the need for change.

During my search for options, I discovered online business. Sceptical and doubting my abilities—too old, too technically inexperienced—I hesitated. My husband was even more doubtful, given the many “get rich quick” schemes online. But the whole concept really appealed to me, and I dug deeper.

Finding the right training programme was key. The one I chose offered not just expert business and technical training but also self-development—which made such a difference in helping me regain purpose and direction.  A surprising coincidence also reassured me: Stuart Ross, the founder, had started his early career near my previous hometown, even working for the estate agency we used to sell our house. That connection gave me added confidence in his training programme.

Joining has turned out to be one of the best decisions I’ve made.  So, if you’re curious about starting an online business, how I built two websites and published a book in 18 months, scroll down for more info or click directly below to access four free training videos which will show you how to get started.

The Freedom Online Businesses Can Provide

Relaxed barefoot senior woman sitting and typing on a laptop computer outside on a balcony in modern residential building complex with her feet up on a table. Working from home concept.

Running your own online business offers a unique blend of time and financial freedom, transforming the way you live and work. Here’s how:

*Time Freedom - With an online business, you control your schedule. Want to work mornings and spend afternoons with your grandchildren or pursue a hobby? You can. By focusing on passive income streams, such as digital products or affiliate marketing, you can reduce the number of hours you need to actively work.

*Financial Freedom - Online businesses can scale far beyond the limitations of a traditional job. Instead of trading time for money, you can leverage tools and platforms to increase your earnings exponentially. For instance, an eBook you write once can be sold thousands of times, and an online course can attract students from around the globe. This scalability enables you to break free from the payday-to-payday cycle and build lasting financial security.

*Geographic Freedom - Whether you want to work from home or while travelling the world, an online business offers the ultimate flexibility. All you need is a laptop and internet connection to manage your operations.

*Emotional Fulfilment - Beyond the practical advantages, running your own business allows you to align your work with your values and passions. You’re not just earning a living—you’re making a difference and creating a legacy.

The Importance of Choosing the Right Training Provider

Starting an online business can be overwhelming without the right guidance. Choosing a reputable training provider can make a significant difference in your success:

Comprehensive Curriculum - Look for courses that cover everything from business setup to marketing and scaling.

Solid Foundations - Tried and tested experiential learning with support and guidance for self-development as well as business skills set.

Expert Instructors - Opt for providers with experienced mentors who have successfully built online businesses themselves.

Community Support - Access to a supportive network can offer motivation, troubleshooting assistance, friendship and encouragement.

Practical Tools - Ensure the program includes actionable steps, templates, and resources you can use immediately.

Up to date – Latest systems, tools and trends.

Investing in a quality training provider saves you time and frustration, setting you up for success from the start.

    How to Get Started

Starting an online business might seem overwhelming, but breaking it down into manageable steps can make it achievable:

    1. Identify Your Niche - Think about your skills, interests, and what problems you can solve for others. Reflect on past experiences that have given you expertise or a unique perspective.
    2. Identify your values and your vision - what kind of life and business you want to achieve.  Without knowing these, and your 'why' for following this personal goal, will make it difficult to find a business idea that you are passionate about and worth getting out of bed for each day - something that you really love doing and can't see yourself ever wanting to retire from.
    3. Learn the Basics - Invest in courses or resources to understand the fundamentals of online business. Topics like digital marketing, social media management, and website creation are great places to start.  So much of this now is highly intuitive and uses ‘drag and drop’ software solutions.
    4. Set Realistic Goals - Define what success looks like for you, whether it’s earning extra income, replacing your full-time salary, or simply creating a meaningful project.
    5. Build Your Online Presence - Create a professional website or social media profiles to showcase your business. Tools like WordPress, Wix, and Canva make it easy to design appealing content without technical expertise.
    6. Start Small - Test your ideas and refine them as you go. You don’t need everything to be perfect right away. Launching a minimum viable product (MVP) can help you gather feedback and adjust.
    7. Find Support - Join online communities or hire a coach to guide you through the process. Connecting with like-minded entrepreneurs can provide motivation and valuable insights.

    Overcoming Common Fears and Misconceptions

It’s natural to feel apprehensive about starting something new, especially later in life. Here are some common fears and how to overcome them:

      • “I’m not tech-savvy.” Many platforms are designed with beginners in mind, offering step-by-step guides and customer support. Plus, you can always outsource technical tasks to freelancers.
      • “I don’t have enough time.” Even dedicating a few hours a week can make a difference. Starting small allows you to build momentum without overwhelming your schedule.
      • “What if I fail?” Failure is part of the learning process. Every misstep teaches you something valuable and brings you closer to success. (what’s worse is the paralysis of never even trying)

    Success Stories to Inspire You

Countless women have transformed their lives by starting online businesses. Here are a few examples of my personal colleagues who all followed the same training as I did:

    • Linda, 62 - Previously a corporate manager for 30 years, used her long experience and knowledge to start a coaching service for young managers preparing to move into senior roles. Her platform now serves individuals with personal development support, providing her with a steady income and a sense of purpose.
    • Bridget, 55 - Passionate about fitness, Bridget started an online coaching business targeting women over 50. Her YouTube channel and online courses have built a loyal community of followers.
    • Christine, 68 - A farmer and market gardener for 40 years, wrote and published book about growing food for self sufficiency and set up an online shop and membership community to supply and motivate others to follow in her footsteps.

You Don't Have to Do It Alone

Senior, business woman and tablet in office for social media, internet browsing or research. Happy, elderly and female employee from Canada with digital touchscreen for networking or web scrolling.

One of the key aspects of the Modern Wealthy/Launch You Programme is the strength of its unique community.  The scale of  support and motivation shared between a movement of like minded people (aged 18 to 80!) has been a massive support throughout my continuing online business journey.

The ambition for my online business is to share my knowledge and experience to help guide women over 50 to navigate life transitions and create fulfilling, financially secure futures - hence the name Silver Reset.  The website (https://www.silverreset.com) is continually growing and expanding to incorporate more useful resources for women at this pivotal stage in their lives.  Whether you’re looking to start an online business, redefine your retirement, or simply figure out what’s next, there will be help and guidance to support you.  There are also details of how to contact me if you would like to ask any questions.

    The Joy of Reinvention

Starting an online business in your 50s, 60s (or 70s) isn’t just about making money - it’s about rediscovering yourself.
